What is Preventative Care?
Preventive care, refers to healthcare services aimed at preventing illness, disease, or injury before they can occur or become more severe. By detecting potential health issues early on, preventative care promotes overall health, well-being and reduces the risk of developing chronic conditions.
Why Early Detection is Important
The earlier you discover a disease the better. During the initial stages, many diseases are more responsive to treatments, reducing the risks of complications and overall health in the future. Cancer, for example, is one such disease we are familiar with in this regard and we all likely know people who have suffered through it. It’s also likely that you know of people or have at least heard of people who had cancer, it was discovered early and the treatment process was successful and much shorter than it would have been otherwise. This is because early-stage cancers are typically confined to the site of origin and have not spread to other parts of the body, making them more manageable and often curable. On the other hand, as cancer progresses and advances to later stages, it becomes more challenging to treat and may have spread to other organs or tissues in the body. Advanced-stage cancers may require more aggressive treatments and may have a lower likelihood of being cured.
It’s diseases like this that are the cause of doctors being very insistent about getting your checkups. And even if you are someone who doesn’t go to the doctor that much, that is completely up to you, but do consider going at least every once in a while—it could save your life.
How does your plan help with this?
All Medical Plans offered on the marketplace offer a variety of services and treatments that are covered at no cost to you because they are preventative services. This has been one of the early rules of the ACA (Affordable Care Act), to require private insurance companies to cover many preventative services at no cost to the member.
Under the ACA (Affordable Care Act), private insurance companies who offer plans through the marketplace must provide a wide range of preventative services at no cost to the member. If you have a plan through the Marketplace, you have access to many of these services at no cost to you. You can read the list here: Click here! But I would summarize these services as: Routine Check-ups, Screenings, Immunizations, Counseling, Diagnostic Tests, Laboratory Work and Preventive Medications.
Cost Effective
Physical and mental well being are without a doubt the most important thing that preventative care seeks to protect. But there is also a practical side to it. Preventative care is cost effective. Many diseases have an early stage that is easier to treat and that is significantly less expensive to treat than its mid to late stage. By catching diseases early, preventative care saves you from these larger expenses. Even though most plans keep you from spending more than $9,400 a year, that Maximum out of pocket figure resets every year. For many people, paying that amount every year would be a financial nightmare.
Take advantage of the cost free preventative care that your plan offers. Even if you know you won’t take advantage of every aspect, at least go for your annual checkup.
